Georgia Winter Hummingbird Report for 2001-2002 This was a pretty good winter for hummingbirds! The numbers were not quite as high as last year, but we still had some good birds reported. Highlights include the first state record of a Broad-billed Hummingbird. Another state first was the returning of two Calliope Hummingbirds to the yards were they spent the previous winter. It will be of much interest to see if either of these birds come back for a third year. This year we had two Allen's Hummingbirds. It has been a few years since we had this species recorded in Georgia. As far as counties go, Gwinnett was on top again followed by Chatham and Fulton. A total of 85 winter hummingbirds were reported in Georgia during the winter season of 2001-2002. The breakdown of species for the 2001-2002 winter season is as follows: Broad-Billed Hummingbird - 1 (1st State Record!) Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 2 Black-chinned Hummingbird -3 Calliope Hummingbird - 3 (2 Returns from last year and the 8-10th State Records) Rufous Hummingbirds - 46 Allen's Hummingbird - 2 (7th & 8th State Record!) Unknown Hummingbird Species - 28
