The Green Violet-ear (Colibri thalassinus) is a tropical species of Mexico, Central America, and South America. Most records of this hummingbird in the U.S. are summer records in Texas. However, there are about 50 accepted records in the U.S. and a couple records as far north as Canada. So keep your eye on those feeders and let us know if this large green and blue hummer pays you a visit. Description: Length: 4.75 inches. (Almost the size of a Blue-throated or Magnificent Hummingbird!) Males and females are colored similarly. but females have a slightly smaller chest patch: Mostly shiny green overall with a decurved black bill and purplish blue patches on the sides of the head and chest. Tail is mostly blue with a blackish subterminal band. Distribution: Observed in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin. Also observed in Alberta and Ontario of Canada. Resident in Mexico, Central America, and South America..
