Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) The Cardinal Flower is one of the hummingbird's favorite. This native plant's habitat is around streams and ponds. It can be used in borders, accents, and is especially nice along a water garden. Plant in groupings for best effect. The variety shown above is "Compliment Red" (Lobelia speciosa). Light: Full Sun, Part Shade (Some shade is needed especially in the South) Blooms: Summer and Fall Height: 2' to 4' Space: 12" to 18" apart Soil: Neutral, Moist, Well Drained Care: Can be propagated by seed or division. Divide in the spring. Mulch in the winter. Once flower head has stopped blooming you can remove to promote more growth. |
