Calliope Hummingbird

 

The Calliope Hummingbird (Stellula calliope) is the smallest North American bird!  There are over 15 state records of Calliope Hummingbirds in Georgia.

Description:

Average weight:  Male 2.5g, Female 2.83g

Male: Metallic green back and crown, white gorget with iridescent violet or purplish red rays that can be erected to show a whiskered effect.

Female: Green back and crown, white throat with dark streaking, buff sides, and white tips on outer tail feathers.

Distribution:

Observed in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Alberta,  British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.  Winters in west-central Mexico.
