Allen's Hummingbird

 

The Allen's Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin) has two recognized subspecies.  Birds of the resident subspecies S.s. sedentarius of the Channel Islands, CA are slightly larger than the subspecies S.s. sasin that migrate.  There have been 9 state records of Allen's Hummingbirds in Georgia.

Description:

Average Weight: Male 3.13g, Female 3.24g.  

Male: Metallic bronze-green head and back, orange-red gorget, rufous flanks and tail.  Distinguished from male Rufous by solid green back.

Female: Green back and crown, white breast, white throat with red spots, rufous flanks and at the base of the tail feathers, outer tail feather tips are white.  Female can not safely be distinguished from the Rufous female in the field.

Immature: Young of both sexes look like the female and can not be safely distinguished from the Rufous in the field.

Distribution:

Observed in Arizona, California, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Vancouver Island B.C.
